Desert Hot Springs: City Council to Debate Dispensaries

The Desert Hot Springs City Council opted Tuesday to push the debate on whether to ban medical cannabis dispensaries to a Nov. 10 meeting. The council will choose whether to ban dispensaries, or send a "hybrid" ordinance based on a model used by West Hollywood, CA. and a potential ordinance being weighed by Palm Springs to the Planning Commission. Councilman Karl Baker argued for the hybrid ordinance, while Councilman Al Schmidt argued for a ban.The City Council first voted to enact a moratorium on Feb. 6, 2007, following an emotional debate at a regular council meeting that day. The issue had come to a head when city officials learned a medical marijuana dispensary, Organic Solutions of the Desert, had opened in Desert Hot Springs – without a business license.
